Local weather shapes the calendar. Spokane has a semi-arid climate with warm, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. The air is dry, especially in summer, so outdoor humidity is far lower than in the eastern half of the country.
Spring and summer bring ants, wasps, and stinging insects; late summer is peak for yellowjackets; and fall pushes mice and overwintering insects indoors as it cools. Termite pressure in the Inland Northwest is far lower than in the Midwest or South. The region's main wood-destroying insect is the carpenter ant, which thrives in the surrounding pine country — so inspections here focus on carpenter ants and moisture at least as much as on termites.
